What is Rectal Prolapse?

A "prolapse" means that a body part has slipped forward or down from where it should be. A rectal prolapse happens when part or all of the wall of the rectum slides out of place, protruding out of the anus. It may be only part of the rectum lining that slips out of the anus or a complete prolapse, where the entire rectum wall slips out. As we age, our pelvic floor can become weaker and rectal prolapse can become more common in women over 50. Constipation or straining to have a bowel movement, lack of estrogen, trauma from childbirth or tissue damage from surgery may also be contributing factors.

Questions we are often asked about Rectal Prolapse

  • Some symptoms to look for are pressure or a bulge in your rectum after coughing, sneezing, or lifting, mucous discharge in your stool, or constipation. Having anal pain, bleeding, or itching.

  • Many have eliminated prolapse symptoms, improved the stage of their prolapse, and some have even reversed prolapse completely! Eat fruits, vegetables, and other foods that contain fiber to avoid constipation. Hydration is essential so drink plenty of water. Pelvic floor exercises and kegels done correctly will strengthen and tighten the muscles.

  • If it's not causing bothersome symptoms, you may be able to live for some time with rectal prolapse, taking care of it at home. However, untreated, it can lead to other complications. Surgery may be an option if rectal prolapse negatively affects your lifestyle, and pelvic floor exercise is essential before and after your surgery.
